Ip Man is a famous Kung Fu master and a Wing Chun grandmaster, living in Foshan, a town, well-known by its schools of martial arts. The main hero has it all: a beautiful wife, a nice house, lots of money and glory, but like many of the people of his town, the war catches him unawares. When Japan invades his hometown, Ip Man like the others has to do dirty jobs for the enemies. The events of the film take place during the Sino-Japan war, 1937. Besides, Ip has to take part in cruel sparring matches, arranged for the invader’s amusement. One day the Japanese Colonel notices the special talent of Ip and offers him to teach Wing Chun to Japanese soldiers. The Wing Chun master refuses such an offer, and has to fight for his survival.
The cult Hong Kong’s martial art masters and actors – Donnie Yen, Simon Yam and Hiroyuki Ikeuchi star in the film. Donnie Yen is known to be the mentor of Bruce Lee, a world-known prominent martial arts master, actor and filmmaker.
The film is considered to be a greatest feature in Hong Kong. The crew of three celebrities: filmmaker Wilson Yip; Donnie Yen in the role of Ip Man; and Sammo Hung, the action choreographer, did their best to create a true masterpiece of martial arts on widescreen.
